While manifold, the lines of research in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures pertain to two major areas of study – linguistic and literary – that often interact and overlap as far as all the languages taught in the Department, that is Danish, English, French, German, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish and, to a lesser extent, Armenian, Catalan, Romanian, and Ucrainian.
In the linguistic area of study, professors and researchers pursue research in the fields of synchronic, diachronic and applied linguistics, and philology. In the literary area, the fields examined regard literary criticism, textual interpretation, literary history, and comparative literature. Research also focuses on the theory and practice of translation (both fiction and non-fiction) and on the teaching of foreign languages, literatures, and cultures.
